Scientist by training. Founder by vocation. Philosopher at heart.
I find my home at the intersection of biology, AI, and philosophy. I’m bridging single-cell genomics, machine learning, and precision genome engineering to move synthetic biology from trial and error to true design. My goal is to expand humanity’s ability to navigate the design space of biology, our most powerful technology, and leverage this for the flourishing of life.
I grew up in a family of seven in the countryside near Cork, Ireland. After winning the top national school chemistry award, I went to University College Cork and became Ireland’s youngest pharmacist. I discovered a passion for research through bioengineering internships at iGEM, ETH Zurich, and Velabs Therapeutics.
After stints in drug discovery, clinical practice, and at the national drug regulator, I returned fully to science for my PhD at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (Huber & Dietrich labs), combining single-cell multi-omics with machine learning to uncover cellular differentiation as a driver of cancer variation and evolution.
Along the way, I co-founded Nucleate Germany, now the country’s largest student biotech entrepreneurship network, and launched PROMETHEUS, a movement dedicated to impact-driven science. I also serve as an advisor to the International Pharmaceutical Federation and the Cosmic Footprint Society on the policy and ethics of emerging biotechnology.
I believe our species has a far better role to play in the story of life. I wrote about why here.
